Outgoing Haiti ambassador awarded ROC (Taiwan) state honor

2020/11/11

Rachel Coupaud, outgoing ambassador of Haiti, was awarded Nov. 9 the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon in recognition of her extensive efforts in strengthening relations between the ROC (Taiwan) and its Caribbean ally.

During the presentation ceremony at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taipei City, MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu praised Coupaud for tirelessly working to deepen bilateral friendship and exchanges throughout her eight years in country. This contribution, spanning the areas of culture, politics and trade, enhanced people-to-people exchanges and mutual understanding between the two sides, he said.

In response, Coupaud said she believes two-way ties will continue going from strength to strength, benefiting the people of both countries. The award came three days after Coupaud was received by President Tsai Ing-wen at the Presidential Office in Taipei.

According to Tsai, Coupaud left no stone unturned in promoting Taiwan-Haiti relations. This commitment is evidenced by her involvement in arranging successful visits to Taiwan by President Jovenel Moise and his predecessor President Michel Joseph. Her presence in Haiti to welcome Taiwan’s delegation during the Journey of Freedom, Democracy, Sustainability last year was sincerely appreciated, she added.

Coupaud also helped deepen the two countries’ cultural and economic ties, Tsai said, citing fruitful activities like Haiti food festivals and exhibitions, as well as inbound industry and trade delegation trips.

Tsai took the opportunity to thank Moise for praising Taiwan’s contribution in strengthening the global response to COVID-19, and supporting the country’s participation in U.N. specialized agencies at this year’s General Assembly.

In addition, Tsai wished Coupaud all the very best for the future and requested she convey her warmest greetings to Moise on behalf of the government and people of Taiwan.
