Premier Su praises container terminal development in Kaohsiung

2020/12/31

Premier Su Tseng-chang officially launched construction of a new container terminal in Kaohsiung Dec. 29, reaffirming government commitment to enhancing the southern port city’s competitiveness.

More than NT$150 billion (US$5.26 billion) has been invested by the public and private sectors over the past 15 years to expand handling capacity at the port, which accounts for 70 percent of container throughput in Taiwan, the premier said.

At a cost of NT$40 billion, the seventh terminal will be equipped with the latest automation and 5G communication technologies, making it one of the most efficient facilities in the world, the premier said, adding that it will also strengthen the city’s position as a global shipping hub.

Su said the terminal is part of a broader development plan by the government to transform Kaohsiung. Other elements include a science park under construction in the city’s Qiaotou District and the Asia New Bay Area project, which has revitalized the old port area.

According to the Kaohsiung branch of Taiwan International Ports Corp. Ltd., when the construction is completed in 2023, the terminal will be able to handle five million 20-foot equivalent units per year and dock four 24,000 TEU container vessels—the largest container ships in the world—at one time.
