2021/04/15

President Tsai Ing-wen launched the ROC (Taiwan) navy landing platform dock Yushan April 13 in the southern port city of Kaohsiung, underscoring the success of government efforts promoting Taiwan’s indigenous defense capabilities.

Constructed by locally headquartered CSBC Corporation, Taiwan, in partnership with National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology based in the northern the city of Taoyuan, the Yushan—named after the country’s highest mountain—is the first in a new class of 10,000-ton amphibious multimission vessels commissioned by the navy.

According to Tsai, the ship encapsulates the fearless spirit of the navy in accepting and carrying out all missions. The Yushan will significantly enhance the scale and scope of military operations while strengthening Taiwan’s defenses, she said.

The vessel is another milestone in the government’s indigenous shipbuilding program, Tsai said, adding that it follows in the footsteps of the homegrown submarine program between CSBC and NCSIT she inaugurated in Kaohsiung last November.

Tsai said cooperation and unity among the military, private sector and people are essential in safeguarding Taiwan. As long as all segments of society continue standing shoulder to shoulder, there are no challenges too great for the country to conquer, she added.

The Yushan—in addition to performing its primary role of transporting troops and equipment—will be deployed for disaster relief and humanitarian assistance endeavors, according to the Ministry of National Defense.
