Foreign Ministers Wu, Brolo talk Taiwan-Guatemala ties in video call

2021/05/14

Foreign Ministers Jaushieh Joseph Wu of Taiwan and Pedro Brolo of Guatemala held a video call May 12 in which they discussed bilateral ties and reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to strengthening cooperation in combating COVID-19.

Taiwan is working with Guatemala and other like-minded partners to secure supplies of vaccines for its Central American ally, Wu said. When Taiwan starts mass production of domestically developed vaccines, the government will fast-track access as soon as feasibly possible for Guatemala and other allies, he added.

Wu said such support is in keeping with Guatemala’s unflagging backing of the country in the international arena, especially its efforts to participate meaningfully in the activities, mechanisms and meetings of the World Health Organization.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Brolo was scheduled to visit Taiwan this month, but the trip was postponed due to coronavirus. The government and people welcome the visit of the country’s good friend when the pandemic has eased, Wu said, adding that he hopes to visit Guatemala again in the near future.

In response, Brolo said he looks forward to traveling to Taiwan and considers it the fraternal responsibility of his government to support Taiwan’s WHO participation. Expertise and essential items provided by Taiwan are helping bolster Guatemala’s response to the COVID-19 and sincerely appreciated, he added.

Taiwan has aided Guatemala since the onset of coronavirus last year, the MOFA said. The government will continue working with the country to safeguard the health and well-being of people, the ministry said.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Minister Wu & @PedroBroloGT had a good video discussion. Topics included #COVID19 in #Taiwan & #Guatemala, efforts to assist the #CentralAmerica ally secure vaccines & a plan to share domestically produced vaccines. We thank the @MinexGt minister for his friendship & support.”

The MOFA said Taiwan and Guatemala enjoy stable and friendly relations. This is evidenced by a raft of completed and ongoing cooperation projects aimed at promoting sustainable development and inclusive prosperity, the ministry added.
