MOFA thanks IPAC for backing Taiwan-Lithuania ties

2021/09/15

A video released by the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China via its official Twitter account in support of Taiwan-Lithuania ties is warmly welcomed by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sept. 13.

Featuring co-chairs and members of parliament from Australia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Ireland, Japan, Lithuania, Sweden, Switzerland, New Zealand, the European Union and the U.K., the video states IPAC’s solidarity with the decision taken by the Baltic state to grow relations with Taiwan.

It follows a chorus of support from around the world for the establishment of The Taiwanese Representative Office in Lithuania, the MOFA said, adding that this included a Formosa Club letter to the heads of the European Commission, Council and Parliament, a statement by the chairs of 14 foreign affairs committees in the EU, U.K. and U.S., and a resolution passed by the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs.

According to the MOFA, Taiwan and Lithuania share the universal values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights and the rule of law, with both sides committed to expanding exchanges in the face of China’s intensifying campaign of coercion. The government will continue working with like-minded partners such as Australia, Japan, the U.S. and European countries to bolster solidarity among democracies around the world, the ministry added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “Voices of the free world ring loud & clear! Impassioned support by @ipacglobal for #Lithuania & its decision to develop relations with #Taiwan & welcome the opening of The Taiwanese Representative Office in Lithuania is much appreciated.”

Established in June 2020, IPAC seeks to deepen collaboration between members on issues related to China such as safeguarding the international rules-based order, upholding human rights, promoting fair trade, strengthening security and protecting national integrity.
