President Tsai Ing-wen lauded the cultural contributions of five individuals and groups Nov. 30, spotlighting their achievements in showcasing Taiwan values and excellence in the respective fields.

Taiwan is fully committed to defending its free and democratic way of life while sharing the country’s values and stories with the world, according to the president .

Tsai made the remarks while attending the Presidential Culture Awards ceremony organized by the Taipei-headquartered General Association of Chinese Culture. The 11th edition of the biennial event saw celebrated filmmaker Ang Lee named a recipient of the Arts and Culture Award.

Lee is highly acclaimed in the field of cinema and culture both at home and abroad, Tsai said. His long-term involvement in Taiwan’s film industry has helped bolster its development, she added.

The Taiwan Thousand Miles Trail Association, a nonprofit organization in Taipei dedicated to preserving the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Taiwan through a network of hiking trails around the country, won the Community Building Award. The association has not only effectively enhanced social cohesion, but also promoted environmental sustainability, the president said.

Dr. Chen Rong-chi won the Humanitarian Dedication Award for being an avid advocate for hospice and palliative care initiatives in Taiwan, Tsai said. Other recipients included Creativity and Innovation Award-winner Chen Bo-jin, a breakdancing champion credited for boosting Taiwan's international visibility by promoting the inclusion of the sport in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games; and Public Advocacy Award-winner, the Dr. Chen Wen-Chen Memorial Foundation, for its contributions to the country’s democracy, freedom and human rights, she added.

High-profile attendees at the event included Vice President Lai Ching-te; Lee Yung-te, minister of culture; Audrey Tang, minister without portfolio; and Chiang Chun-nan, vice president of the GACC.
