2022/02/23

Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his wife Susan’s visit March 2-5 to Taiwan is sincerely welcomed by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The four-day itinerary includes an audience with President Tsai Ing-wen, a banquet hosted by Vice President Lai Ching-te, a meeting with Legislative Yuan President You Si-kun, and a meeting with and banquet hosted by MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu. Pompeo will also deliver an address during an event staged by Taipei City-based Prospect Foundation, as well as take part in discussions with academics, business representatives and officials.

During Pompeo’s April 2018 to January 2021 tenure as secretary of state, the MOFA said, he firmly supported Taiwan-U.S. ties. This was evidenced by multiple arms sales, lifting restrictions on official exchanges and releasing declassified cables on the Six Assurances, the ministry added.

Several bilateral partnerships were also launched under Pompeo’s leadership, the MOFA said, citing the Education Initiative, Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue, Consultations on Democratic Governance in the Indo-Pacific Region, and Agreement on Scientific and Technological Cooperation.

Since leaving office, the MOFA said, Pompeo has publicly spoken in support of Taiwan and safeguarding its freedom and democratic way of life. The upcoming visit further underscores rock-solid Taiwan-U.S. relations and the strength of the enduring partnership, the ministry added.
