Taiwan takes action to enhance biodiversity, realize SDGs

2022/05/23

A resolution passed by the German Bundestag backing Taiwan’s observer status at the upcoming 75th World Health Assembly is sincerely welcomed by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs May 20.

Adopted the day before, the resolution was proposed by Germany’s ruling coalition comprising the Social Democrats, Greens and Free Democrats, as well as the leading opposition Union parties. It is the first such bill by the Bundestag backing Taiwan’s participation in the activities, mechanisms and meetings of the World Health Organization.

The resolution requires the German government to submit regular reports on Taiwan’s WHO inclusion, the MOFA said, adding that it illustrates public support in the EU member state in the run-up to WHA75.

Taking place May 22 to 28 in Geneva, WHA75 is the first physical gathering of the WHO’s annual decision-making body attended by delegations from all member states since the onset of COVID-19.

The ministry said the resolution is another show of support in line with those made by Germany’s ruling coalition in November, a resolution by the Petitions Committee of the Bundestag in December urging expanded Taiwan-German exchanges, as well as the communique following the meeting of the Group of Seven foreign ministers earlier this month stressing the importance of cross-strait peace and calling for Taiwan’s meaningful WHO participation.

Taiwan and Germany share the universal values of freedom, democracy, respect for human rights and rule of law, the MOFA said. Based on this solid foundation, the government will continue to cooperate with the European country in deepening bilateral ties, advancing post-pandemic prosperity, contributing to global health, and promoting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, the ministry added.
