MOFA, MOE stage event for Taiwan scholarship recipients

2025/05/13

A farewell party was held by the Ministries of Education and Foreign Affairs May 9 in Taipei City for the graduating class of this year’s Taiwan Scholarship and Huayu Enrichment Scholarship programs.

According to the MOFA, the event involved more than 300 participants, including students from 55 countries and 16 members of the diplomatic corps stationed in Taiwan.

During his opening remarks, Deputy Foreign Minister François Chihchung Wu said since their launch in 2004, the programs have benefited more than 3,000 students from Taiwan’s diplomatic allies.

Among this year’s graduating class of 912 youth from 82 countries, 20 recipients from Belize, Guatemala, Paraguay, Somaliland, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines are honored for their outstanding performances.

As part of the MOFA’s integrated diplomacy approach and Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project, Wu said the number of recipients of the Taiwan Scholarship program will be increased from 400 to 500 next year.

In addition, MOFA and MOE are working to expand the Taiwan Global Pathfinders Initiative to include youths from Taiwan’s allies. The initiative was launched in January this year by President Lai Ching-te and the first round of the initiative for foreign applicants, set to kick off in July, will focus on projects related to sustainable tourism and smart agriculture, while the second round will take place two months later and focus on other subjects.

The deputy minister offered congratulations to the graduating class and encouraged them to apply what they learned in Taiwan in their home countries to further expand exchanges.

Deputy Education Minister Yeh Ping-cheng encouraged students to make use of an MOE project that offers employment counseling for international students to pursue careers in Taiwan. He hoped to see every program recipient eventually serve as an ambassador for Taiwan in their home country, adding that Taiwan is proud of foreign students’ achievements.
