Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Chen Ming-chi said June 13 that safeguarding peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is a shared priority among global democracies in the face of escalating threats from China.
Chen made the remarks during the 2025 Globsec Forum organized by the Slovakia-based think tank in Prague, Czechia. Speaking in the “Taiwan: The Global Imperative for Stability” session, he said the country is committed to strengthening its self-defense capabilities and deepening international cooperation to effectively deter China’s aggression.
According to the deputy minister, Taiwan’s strategies to counter authoritarian expansion include increasing the national defense budget, carrying out military reforms and developing asymmetric combat capabilities. The country is working with its allies and democratic partners to maintain the cross-strait status quo through diplomatic channels and by upholding freedom of navigation, he said, adding that the government also continues to seek more support from the global community for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations.
Chen urged countries around the world to take proactive measures to prevent conflict from breaking out and to defend global economic stability, freedom and the rule of law. He emphasized that Taiwan should not be excluded from global agencies, citing Taiwan’s significant contributions during the pandemic, among other efforts.
Other prominent figures joining the session included defense, foreign affairs and national security officials from Czechia, Estonia and Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, adding that they all expressed support for Taiwan.
The deputy minister took the opportunity to hold bilateral talks with European political figures during the forum, as well as engaging in joint interviews with media outlets to elaborate on Taiwan’s European policies, according to the MOFA.
