President Lai, Premier Cho attend launch of sports ministry

President Lai Ching-te said that the Ministry of Sports will boost domestic health and unity as it enables Taiwan to continue to shine at international competitions.
Lai made the remarks at the ministry’s launch ceremony Sept. 9 in Taipei City and called Lee Yang, a two-time Olympic badminton gold medalist and the newly sworn-in MOS minister, a capable and well-prepared leader with concrete plans to achieve the ministry’s goals.
Cho said that the first advisory group meeting on the establishment of a sports ministry was convened a year ago by the Executive Yuan. Five advisory group meetings were held to hear from academics, coaches and professional athletes on the protection of athlete rights, career development for students athletes, the advancement of the sports industry, the promotion of an active society and how to hold global sporting events.
The premier described the organization of the MOS as comprising the Sports for All Agency and three centers for training, research and industry development. He added that the ministry’s proposed 2026 budget is NT$24.8 billion (US$ 819 million), in line with the president’s campaign promise.
The premier concluded by encouraging Lee and the MOS in their work to fulfill the spirit of sports for all and optimize the ecosystem of the national sports industry.
