Taiwan calls out Chinese maritime encroachment

2025/09/15

Taiwan said Sept. 11 that China’s unlawful decision to set up a nature reserve in the South China Sea could disrupt regional peace.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement responding to Beijing’s Sept. 9 approval of the establishment of a national nature reserve at Scarborough Shoal, known to Taiwan’s government as Minzhu Reef. The ministry said that this unilateral behavior, which undermines Indo-Pacific stability, is an embodiment of the hegemonic mindset of the Chinese government.

The MOFA reiterated that under international law and the law of the sea, Taiwan’s sovereignty over islands and attendant territorial waters in the South China Sea remains unchanged. The government is willing to hold discussions with neighboring countries including the Philippines to peacefully settle disputes and jointly uphold peace in the region.

The ministry concluded that, in accordance with the four principles and five actions proposed in 2016 by then President Tsai Ing-wen, Taiwan will continue to advocate for and participate in multilateral talks to jointly safeguard security in the South China Sea.
