Deputy Foreign Minister François Chih-chung Wu gave an interview to French newspaper Le Monde April 23 in Taipei City in which he discussed Taiwan’s key role in regional security and the global supply chain.
The deputy FM said in the piece, published May 3, that China has intensified military intimidation of Taiwan in recent years. He cited as evidence the more than 5,000 warplanes that entered the country’s air defense identification zone last year, as well as Beijing’s disruption of President Lai Ching-te’s visit to an allied nation last month.
Wu said that China’s continuous suppression of Taiwan’s international participation does not alter its importance to the world, especially as a key player in high-tech supply chains. He added that Taiwan is ready and willing to make contributions to the world.
The deputy minister additionally said that Taiwan will keep reinforcing its self-defense capabilities to maintain the regional status quo and protect its sovereignty. He called on the international community to stand against China’s use of force or coercion to unilaterally change said status quo.
The Taiwan Strait is a crucial passage for global shipping, Wu said, adding that the security of the area influences international economic and trade stability. He described the substantive actions of like-minded countries that demonstrate the importance they place on the freedom of navigation, signifying that cross-strait peace is a global consensus.
