President Tsai Ing-wen expressed concern over post-hurricane recovery efforts in Honduras while reaffirming the strength of bilateral ties during a warm and friendly call Dec. 24 with the Central America ally’s President Juan Orlando Hernandez.

This conversation coincides with Christmas Eve, a traditional time for sharing special moments with good friends, Tsai said. On behalf of the government and people, it is hoped everyone in Honduras has a merry Christmas and happy new year, she added.

According to Tsai, Taiwan and Honduras share a long history of formal relations, friendship and cooperation. This has gone from strength to strength during Hernandez’s time in office, she said.

Tsai said she is keeping a close eye on recovery and reconstruction efforts in Honduras following Hurricanes Eta and Iota last month, adding that it is the sincere wishes of the government and people for life in the Central American nation to return to normal as soon as possible. Taiwan will always care for Honduras, and the strength of friendship between the two countries is unshakable, she added.

The 10-minute call, which took place at the Presidential Office in Taipei City, also involved Jaushieh Joseph Wu, minister of foreign affairs, and Wellington Koo, secretary-general of the National Security Council.
