National Center of Photography and Images opens in Taipei

The National Center of Photography and Images opened its doors to the public April 20 in Taipei City, spotlighting the government’s commitment to preserving, promoting, and researching photographic works by homegrown artists.
 
According to the Ministry of Culture, the center is the country’s first photography and video art institution.
 
Speaking at the opening ceremony April 19, Minister of Culture Lee Yung-te said the occasion marked a very important milestone in Taiwan’s visual art history. Its establishment has long been advocated by the photography industry and has received considerable support from the ministry, he added.
 
High-profile attendees at the event included National Taiwan Museum Director Hung Shih-yu and National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts Director Liang Yung-fei.
 
NCPI is the result of plans to protect national photographic assets and establish a related arts center initiated by the MOC in 2015. The public works project was jointly executed by the MOC’s Bureau of Cultural Heritage, NTM and NTMFA with the threefold objective of rescuing and restoring culturally significant photographic works; cultivating restoration talent; and advancing research in photography- and image-based arts.
