7th Trending Taiwan Short Film Competition launched by MOFA

2021/09/03

The Trending Taiwan Short Film Competition opened Aug. 31 as part of government efforts to raise the country’s profile on the global stage, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Organized by the MOFA’s Department of International Information Services, the seventh edition of the annual event is accepting global submissions of three minutes or less in the categories of creative and brand until Oct. 16. The former centers on inspiring stories of beauty and culture, while the latter focuses on framing Taiwan as a marketable commodity.

Entries will be assessed by a six-member panel on the basis of narrative technique, script creativity, technical proficiency and theme appeal. A total of 20 submissions from creative will be shortlisted in the first round, along with 12 from brand.

For creative, there is one first prize of NT$200,000 (US$6,758), two second prizes of NT$60,000, three third prizes of NT$30,000 and six distinctions of NT$20,000. For brand, first, second and third prizes attract NT$150,000, NT$100,000 and NT$50,000, respectively, with five distinctions of NT$20,000.

The winners, who are to be honored during a ceremony Nov. 10 in Taipei City, will have their works published on the MOFA’s website, social media platforms and YouTube channel.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “The @Trending_Taiwan Short Film Competition returns bigger & better than ever! We need super storytellers to dig deep & draw the curtain back on the country’s DNA. Submissions close Oct. 16, so time truly is of the essence. Let’s keep #Taiwan trending!”

First launched in 2015, the competition is one of the MOFA’s most successful digital diplomacy promotions. It has attracted around 800 submissions to date from nationals of countries such as France, India, Malaysia and Switzerland.
