2022/02/09

The decision by the U.S. Department of State to approve the sale of a defensive weapons package worth US$100 million is deeply appreciated by the government and people, according to the Presidential Office Feb. 8.

It marks the second military sale to Taiwan made under the administration of President Joe Biden and the first this year, the PO said, adding the move underscores U.S. commitment to the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances.

The PO thanked the U.S. for recognizing the importance of a strong defensive capacity. Taiwan will continue to deepen cooperation with like-minded partners across the region to ensure peaceful and prosperous development in the Indo-Pacific, the PO said.

According to the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the latest package comprises equipment and services to support participation in the Patriot International Engineering Services Program and Field Surveillance Program for five years. In addition to helping improve Taiwan’s security, the deal is expected to further political stability, military balance and overall progress in the region, it said.
