MOFA thanks Lithuania, Thailand for post-quake donations

2024/04/16

The donations of 50,000 euros (US$53,000) and NT$1 million (US$30,966) by Lithuania and Thailand, respectively, for reconstruction in eastern Taiwan following a magnitude 7.2 earthquake earlier this month are deeply appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said April 13.

According to the MOFA, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis and Seimas Speaker Viktorija Cymilite-Nielsen both expressed condolences over the casualties and damage caused by the quake, through social media or text messaging right after the temblor hit Hualien County in the morning of April 3.

The ministry said Landsbergis highlighted the expanding cooperation with Taiwan in various fields over the years, including Taiwan contributions to international development such as reconstruction in Ukraine led by Lithuania.

Taiwan and the Baltic state are like-minded allies and partners for good committed to contributing to the global community, the MOFA said. Citing their joint efforts in reconstruction in Ukraine’s Irpin and Borodianka, the ministry said the government will continue to work with Lithuania to safeguard democratic values.

Equally appreciated, the MOFA said, was that both Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and his deputy Parnpree Bahiddha Nukara also expressed concern on the day of the earthquake. Such warm sympathy and practical support are deeply touching, the MOFA said, adding that it hopes such kindness offered between the two sides will influence the rest of the world.
