2024/03/05

The Ministry of Culture announced that Yu Pei-yun, National Taitung University Graduate Institute of Children’s Literature chair, was awarded the 7th Émile Guimet Prize for Asian Literature in the new category of graphic novel, Feb. 29.

“Son of Formosa,” a collaboration by Yu and illustrator Zhou Jian-xin, follows the life of political critic Tsai Kun-lin (1930-2023). It has been translated into Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Korean.

Delivering her acceptance speech, Yu said the story presents Tsai as a role model for a new generation through showing events in his tumultuous life as opposed to the usual portrayal of him as a political victim. The story educates about the martial law era, giving both domestic and international readers a deeper understanding of Taiwan history.

Launched in 2017, the Émile Guimet Prize for Asian Literature encourages Asian writers to translate and publish original work in France.
