President Tsai receives Israeli parliamentary delegation

2024/04/17

President Tsai Ing-wen received a cross-party delegation from the Israeli Knesset at the Presidential Office April 15 in Taipei City, anticipating further deepening bilateral ties going forward.

The delegation is led by Taiwan-Israel Friendship Group Chair Boaz Toporovsky and comprises his fellow parliamentarians Boaz Bismuth, Vladimir Beliak and Matti Sarfatti Harcavi.

According to Tsai, interactions between Taiwan and Israel have become increasingly close in recent years. Examples of positive developments include regular dialogues spanning such areas as the economy, energy and the environment; agreements in education, public health and other domains; and the joint declaration on tourism cooperation signed just last month, she said.

Israel is a key global hub for startups, and Taiwan’s major R&D institutions and manufacturers are eager to expand bilateral cooperation so the two sides can leverage their respective strengths and shared values of freedom and democracy to build more resilient global supply chains, she said.

Tsai thanked Toporovsky for actively promoting bilateral youth education and humanitarian aid cooperation and supporting Taiwan’s global participation via social media and op-eds. She also expressed sincere concern over Iran’s recent attack on Israel and condemned the use of violence.

In response, Toporovsky praised Taiwan as a beacon of democratic and liberal values and commended Tsai for her leadership. He also expressed condolences for the loss of life and injuries caused by the earthquake that hit eastern Taiwan earlier this month.

Taiwan and Israel are good friends and have much in common as small but strong democracies in a harsh environment, he said. It is time that the friendship became stronger to forge a better future for the generations to come, the chair added.
