Taiwan to deepen AI cooperation with Germany

2024/04/10

National Science and Technology Council Minister Wu Tsung-tsong received a delegation from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research April 8 in Taipei City, underscoring the two sides’ commitment to deepening technological collaboration.

Led by Kathrin Meyer, the group included German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence Chief Executive Advisor Wolfgang Wahlster, who was appointed coordinator of a joint AI initiative in an agreement inked by Taiwan and Germany last year.

During his welcoming speech, Wu lauded the establishment of the Taiwan AI Center of Excellence last year, adding that it has served as a critical platform to tackle related issues.

In response, Wahlster praised Taiwan as a leader in semiconductor manufacturing and expressed hope that the two sides could work together to apply AI to advanced semiconductor production and self-driving cars.

During the group’s three-day stay, members will gain a deeper understanding of the Taiwan Chip-based Industrial Innovation Program, participate in multiple AI and semiconductor forums and pay visits to Academia Sinica, Industrial Technology Research Institute and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, among other tech companies and research centers.

Taiwan and Germany share high ambitions to develop new AI applications, the NSTC said, citing the latter’s passage of an AI strategy in 2018 and allocation of 5 billion euros (US$5.4 billion) to related R&D through 2025.
