MOFA warmly welcomes visit of UK parliamentary delegation

The visit by a seven-member U.K. Labor Party delegation is sincerely welcomed by the government and people of Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs March 30.

Led by House of Lords member Lord Leong, co-chair of Labour Friends of Taiwan, the group includes Lords’ member Lord Grantchester; House of Commons’ member Sharon Hodgson, chair of the Finance Committee; and Commons’ member Dame Diana Johnson, chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee, the MOFA said.

During the seven-day visit, the group will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen; attend banquets hosted by Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu and Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu; call on the Ministries of Economic Affairs and Education and Councils of National Development, National Science and Technology, and Mainland Affairs; and pay visits to high-tech enterprises. The two sides will exchange views on geopolitical conditions, Taiwan-U.K. economic relations and scientific research cooperation, the ministry added.

According to the MOFA, Leong is a staunch friend of Taiwan’s that has long taken interest in preserving Indo-Pacific peace and is devoted to deepening Taiwan-U.K. exchanges.

As like-minded partners who share the values of democracy and freedom, Taiwan and the U.K. have seen growing collaboration in areas spanning culture, economy, education and trade, the ministry said, adding the group’s visit is expected to reinforce the two-way partnership.
