President Tsai receives Paraguayan Senate delegation

President Tsai Ing-wen thanked Paraguay for actively promoting Taiwan’s international participation and said she hoped that the two sides would continue to deepen exchanges to benefit their people.

Tsai made the remarks April 16 in Taipei City while receiving a group led by Senate President Silvio Adalberto Ovelar Benítez. Other prominent members include Hermelinda Alvarenga de Ortega, second vice president of the Chamber of Senators; Paraguayan Ambassador to Taiwan Carlos Fleitas; and Sen. Pedro Alejandro Díaz Verón.

According to the president, bilateral ties have grown ever stronger over the past eight years, as demonstrated by her decision to make Paraguay her first official visit after taking office in 2016. Last year then President-elect Santiago Peña Palacios came to Taiwan shortly after his election, and Vice President Lai Ching-te flew to Paraguay not long after for Peña’s inauguration. These reciprocal visits intensify the countries’ mutual bond, Tsai said.

The two-way cooperation has additionally yielded fruitful results spanning the fields of agriculture and livestock breeding, education, medicine, and the empowerment of women, the president said, noting the establishment of Taiwan-Paraguay Polytechnic University as a particular success.

Both Peña and the Paraguayan government often speak up for Taiwan on the international stage, Tsai said, urging the delegates to continue the good work.

In response, Ovelar Benítez said that his country remains firm in its heartfelt support of Taiwan. He concluded by expressing confidence in the long-term collaboration possibilities across the board for both parties.
