Taiwan artists shine in Japan’s latest International Manga Award

2023/12/29

Three Taiwan comic artists were announced as winners in Japan’s 17th International Manga Award competition, highlighting Taiwan’s creative soft power, the Ministry of Culture said Dec. 26.

Jason Chien received gold for his “Wind Chaser Under the Blue Sky,” while Lin I-Chen and Shimizu both won bronze for their respective works “207th Bone” and “Tomoe's Memories of Koumeya vol.2,” the MOC said.

Chien’s piece portrays two teenagers from Taiwan and Japan who dream of making track and field history by racing trains during World War II, Lin’s depicts a girl trying to break free from family tradition in order to escape death and Shimizu’s follows the story of a young restaurant owner as she seeks out new gourmet dishes during the Taisho period of Taiwan’s Japanese colonial era (1895-1945).

According to the ministry, the works were selected from among a total of 587 submissions from 82 countries. Recipients of the one gold, three silver, two special encouragements and nine bronze prizes will receive their awards during a ceremony scheduled for March 2024 by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Minister of Culture Shih Che said domestic graphic artists have been excelling in global manga contests and bag prizes nearly every year in Japanese competitions. He vowed that the ministry would continue to support Taiwan’s manga creators.
