Foreign Minister Wu gives interview to Der Spiegel

Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu called on democracies around the world to continue supporting Ukraine’s resistance to the Russian invasion.
 
The minister called such acts of unity extremely important to Taiwan during an interview with Cornelius Dieckmann last December for an article published March 1 by Hamburg-based newsweekly Der Spiegel.
 
According to Wu, the experiences of people in Taiwan, who regularly face China’s ongoing threats, have given them a keen understanding of the lack of respect authoritarian regimes hold for the rules-based international order. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and its continued assault since only drives the point home.
 
Knowing that such atrocity and devastation can also happen in Taiwan, the government and people continue to offer humanitarian assistance in the hope that such support will inspire the people in Ukraine to hold the line, the minister said.
 
Wu said if Russia wins this war, it will be a huge setback to the free world and will further encourage China to expand its reach. It is imperative that members of the free world continue their unwavering support for Ukraine to remind Beijing that they will counteract any attack on a democracy, he added.
 
Wu showed Dieckmann a pair of boxing gloves gifted by Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko as a token of appreciation for Taiwan’s aid, and a Ukrainian national flag signed by soldiers fighting on the front line.
 
According to the MOFA, the report also featured Tony Lu, who joined Ukraine’s fight in 2022, as well as Mariana Savchenko, a Taiwan-based Sinologist who established the organization Ukrainian Voices to help local people better understand the situation in her country.
